FAQ How do you charge for your time? Magazine assignments are generally paid by the word. In most cases, corporate writing projects will be bid by the job. After you´ve explained the scope of your project, your objectives, the deadline and any limitations that might apply, I´ll provide you with a written bid so you know how to budget for the work. If you prefer to be billed on an hourly basis, the rate is $85 per hour. When is payment due? For magazine assignments, payment is usually made at the time of publication. For corporate projects, half the total bid or estimated amount is due at the time the project is assigned. The remaining fifty percent is due within 15 days of invoice following completion of the work. If I want revisions made to the copy, is that included in the original bid? Two re-writes are included in the original fee, as is my attendance at a planning meeting requested by you. There is no charge for the initial consultation. If the scope or direction of a project is substantially changed during the project, I will provide a revised bid and work will continue. What is normal turnaround time for an assignment? When we initially discuss a project, I will give you a good estimate of the time required for completion based on the job. It can, of course, vary widely depending on the length of the copy, current schedules, and the type of writing required. In general, typical projects are completed in days rather than weeks. Am I going to be charged for expenses above and beyond the bid or hourly fee? Any incidental expenses required by the assignment (such as phone calls, delivery costs, etc.) will be billed at cost. Mileage will be billed at the current IRS-accepted rate. Such expenses are typically nominal, however, and I will make every attempt to receive prior approval before incurring them. Travel required by the project, and approved in advance by you, will also be billed at cost. Do you provide design services? Good design is a highly specialized skill. I can recommend designers for you to work with, or work with a designer of your choice. Can I cancel a project after work has started? Yes. You can cancel an assigned project at any time, for any reason, although you will be billed for time invested to that point.
